Replying to Google Reviews for Retail Shops in India

TL;DR

Shop reviews are about the collection, the price and how staff treated the customer. Reply to the product they mentioned, handle exchange disputes calmly, and never argue about price in public.

A shopper who finds your shop on Google Maps has not seen your shelves yet. Reviews tell them whether the collection is worth the trip and whether staff will pressure them.

This page is for clothing and saree shops, jewellers, footwear and electronics stores, general stores and showrooms.

What shoppers write about

  • The collection. Variety, new arrivals and whether the product matched the photos.
  • Price. Whether it was fair, whether bargaining was allowed and whether the price on the tag matched the bill.
  • Staff behaviour. Helpful or pushy, and how much patience they showed.
  • Exchange and return policy. The source of the angriest reviews.
  • Authenticity. Complaints about duplicate or old stock. These are serious.
  • Convenience. Parking, trial rooms, billing queues and festival crowds.

A 5-star review

Review

"Lovely saree collection. The staff showed us lots of options without any pressure."

Reply you could post

"Thank you, [Name]! Glad you enjoyed the saree collection and that our team gave you time to look. Come back for the new arrivals, and bring the family."

A 2-star review about an exchange

Review

"Tried to exchange a shirt after three days and they refused. Nobody told me about the exchange rule when I bought it."

Reply you could post

"We are sorry about the exchange, [Name]. The exchange rule should have been explained at the counter. Please bring your bill to the store manager and we will look at it with you."

A Hinglish 4-star review

Review

"Collection accha hai, bas staff thoda pushy tha."

Reply you could post

"Shukriya [Name] ji, collection pasand aane ki khushi hai! Staff ke vyavhaar ke liye hum maafi chahte hain. Hum apni team ko samjhayenge ki aap araam se dekh sakein."

Mistakes shop owners make

  • Arguing about price. "That is the MRP" does not help. Explain briefly why, if you can, and move on.
  • Ignoring exchange complaints. The next shopper will read it as "this shop will not help me if something goes wrong".
  • Brushing off an authenticity complaint. If someone says a product was fake or old stock, take it seriously, ask them to bring the bill and speak to them directly.
  • Using replies for offers. A reply that says "visit us for a Diwali sale" looks like an advert, not an answer.

Festival rush

Reviews spike after Diwali, Eid, wedding season and sales. They are often written in a hurry, about crowds and billing queues. Reply within a day. A short, specific answer to a crowd complaint, such as adding another billing counter, shows the shop listens.

Getting more reviews from shoppers

Ask at the billing counter when the shopper is happy with the purchase. A QR code on the counter, on the bill or on the shopping bag works. Ask every customer, and do not give a discount on the next purchase for a review. See how to get more Google reviews without breaking Google's rules.

FAQ

How do I reply to an exchange or refund complaint?

Apologise that the rule was not explained, say how it works in one sentence, and invite the customer to come in with the bill. Keep the argument offline.

What if a reviewer says a product was fake or old stock?

Take it seriously. Thank them, ask them to bring the bill and the product, and offer to look into it. Do not accuse them in public. If the claim is false, you can report the review.

Can I reply to every review during the festival rush?

Yes, and it helps. Draft replies save time so each one can still mention the product the shopper wrote about.

Which tone suits a shop?

Casual works for most shops. Use Hinglish if your customers write in it, and Professional for showrooms and jewellers.
