How to Write a Google Business Profile Description (With Examples)
Your Google Business Profile description can be up to 750 characters, and only the first couple of hundred show before a reader taps "more". Write it in plain text, say what you are, where you are and who you serve, and leave out links, phone numbers, prices, offers and hype. Four true sentences are usually enough.
The business description is one of the few places on your Google profile where you describe your business in your own words. Most owners either leave it blank or paste in a paragraph of slogans. A clear, plain description helps a person decide whether you are the right place, and it costs you ten minutes once.
This guide covers the limits, what to put in, what to keep out, a four-sentence formula, and examples for a cafe, a salon, a clinic and a gym.
What the description is, and how much of it people see
The description is a short text on your Business Profile, set by you. It can be up to 750 characters. Guides such as BrightLocal's report that only roughly the first 250 characters show before a reader has to tap "more", so put the most useful sentence first.
We have not seen Google say the description is a ranking factor, so do not write it for search. Write it for the person reading your profile, who is deciding whether to visit.
What to leave out
- Links and web addresses. Your website has its own field.
- Phone numbers and email addresses. They have their own fields too.
- Prices, offers and discounts. They go out of date, and they read like an advert. Use Google Posts for offers.
- Hype. "Best in the city", "number one" and "amazing" tell the reader nothing and cannot be checked.
- Capital letters, emoji and symbols. They look careless in a description. This is our recommendation, and it is also what our own description checker enforces.
- Keyword lists. "Cafe, coffee shop, best coffee, breakfast, brunch Bengaluru" reads as spam. Normal sentences use your keywords naturally anyway.
These limits match what the guides we checked report. We could not find Google's own wording on description rules, so if the exact policy matters to you, confirm it in Google's Business Profile Help.
A four-sentence formula
- What you are and where. "Brew & Barrel is a neighbourhood café in Indiranagar, Bengaluru."
- What you offer, in specifics. Name the real things: single-origin filter coffee, bridal makeup, vaccinations, strength training.
- Who you serve, or what is distinctive and true. Students, families, beginners, wedding parties. Or how you work: "we roast our beans in small batches".
- One practical fact. Languages spoken, whether walk-ins are welcome, or when appointments are available. Opening hours have their own field, so do not repeat them.
Weak and strong, side by side
Weak: "We are the BEST cafe in the city!!! Amazing coffee, amazing food, amazing service. Call 98XXXXXXXX for 20% off. Visit www.example.com. #coffee #cafe #bengaluru"
It has capitals, hype, a phone number, a discount, a link and hashtags, and it tells you nothing about the place. Here is the same cafe written plainly:
"Brew & Barrel is a neighbourhood café in Indiranagar, Bengaluru, serving single-origin filter coffee, fresh bakes and an all-day breakfast menu. We roast our beans in small batches and change the menu with the season. Come in to work, meet friends or take a bag of beans home. We are open for dine-in and takeaway, and our team speaks English, Hindi and Kannada."
More examples
These are examples written for this page, not real businesses. Replace everything with your own true details.
"Glow Studio is a unisex salon in Andheri West, Mumbai, offering haircuts, colouring, keratin treatments, facials and bridal makeup. Appointments are available for bookings and walk-ins. We look after students, working professionals and wedding parties, and our team speaks English, Hindi and Marathi."
"Sharma Family Clinic is a general practice in Sector 21, Gurugram, for adults and children. We see patients for everyday illness, vaccinations, health check-ups and follow-up care for long-term conditions. Appointments are available on weekdays and Saturday mornings, and our doctors speak English and Hindi."
"Peak Fitness is a gym in Salt Lake, Kolkata, with strength training, cardio and group classes for beginners and regular members. Trainers are on the floor during peak hours to help with form and programmes. We offer day passes and monthly and annual memberships, and our staff speak English, Hindi and Bengali."
For a clinic, stick to the services you offer and do not promise results or describe treatments as cures. Our guide on replying to reviews for clinics and hospitals covers the same care in public text.
Mistakes to avoid
- Copying your website's About page. It is usually too long and written for a different place.
- Describing what customers think. "Our customers love our service" is a claim you cannot back up unless you have reviews that say it.
- Leaving it blank. An empty description is a missed chance to say what you do in plain words.
- Never updating it. If you add a service or move, change the text too.
- Writing only for Google. If a sentence would sound odd read aloud to a customer, cut it.
How to change it
Sign in to the Google account that manages your profile, search for your business name, and choose to edit your profile, then the business description. The menu labels change from time to time, but the field is under your profile's business information. If you have not yet verified your profile, start with our guide to creating and verifying a Google Business Profile in India, and see how to manage your Google Business Profile for the rest of the profile.
How Replykar helps
The Get found tab in Replykar can draft a description from your profile details. The draft is checked against the rules above (length, no links or phone numbers, no hype or invented claims), and it will not say customers love something unless your reviews back it up. You read it and edit it, and nothing goes live until you apply it. Replykar keeps your previous description so you can restore it.

How long can a Google Business Profile description be?
Up to 750 characters. Only roughly the first 250 show before a reader taps "more", so put the most useful sentence first.
Can I put a link or phone number in the description?
No. Links and contact details have their own fields on your profile, and guides report that descriptions should not include them. Put your website and phone number in those fields instead.
Should I use keywords in my description?
Use the words a customer would use, in normal sentences, such as "café", "bridal makeup" or "vaccinations". Do not stuff a list of keywords. It reads as spam and we have not seen evidence that it helps.
Can I mention offers or prices?
It is better not to. They go out of date quickly and they read like an advert. Use Google Posts for offers.
How often should I update the description?
Whenever something true about the business changes, such as a new service, a new location or new languages. Otherwise it can stay as it is.
